Feed an oiled floor, keep the matt look

FirstFloor Maintenance Oil is our own-brand oil for oiled timber and cork floors, made with vegetable oils, waxes and resins. FirstFloor describes it as helping protect the surface against common spills like wine, tea and coffee.

It feeds the wood, it does not sit on top

An oiled floor is protected by oil soaked into the timber, not by a surface coat. Over time that oil wears and the floor can look dry or patchy. This tops the oil back up, so the floor stays fed and keeps its natural matt look.

Data sheets

Two things to get right

This is for oiled timber and cork only, not for lacquered, sealed or raw timber, which are cared for differently. If you are not sure of your finish, test an out-of-the-way patch first.

Oil-soaked cloths and pads can heat up and catch fire on their own. FirstFloor's instructions say to submerge used cloths in water straight after use, and never to leave them screwed up in a bin.

How to apply it, and what to avoid

  1. Stir well before use.
  2. Clean the floor with a neutral wood cleaner, and make sure it is dry and dust-free.
  3. Apply a thin, even coat by cloth on small areas, or by machine on larger ones.
  4. Buff it in with a white pad for the best result.
  5. Let it dry 6 to 12 hours with good ventilation before using the floor.
  6. Submerge used cloths in water. Oil-soaked cloths can self-combust if left dry.

Steps follow FirstFloor's own Instructions for Use (linked below). Timings are FirstFloor's, for good ventilation.

Do

  • Use it as part of a regular routine, before the floor starts to look dry.
  • For a whole floor, apply it by machine rather than by hand, as the maker's own instructions describe for larger areas.
Don't

  • Lay it on thick. Thin coats cure better.
  • Leave used cloths screwed up dry. They can catch fire.
