Timber Floor Cleaning & Care – The NZ Guide
Timber floors are timeless, but looking after them in New Zealand’s climate requires the right approach. This guide covers cleaning and maintenance routines for both oiled and lacquered finishes.
Daily Care
- Sweep or vacuum with a soft head
- Use entry mats to reduce grit
- Wipe spills immediately
Weekly Cleaning
Use a Bona Spray Mop or microfibre pad with FirstFloor Wood Floor Cleaner (our own NZ-made concentrate — safe on lacquered AND oiled finishes). Avoid soaking the floor.
Oiled Floors
Refresh with FirstFloor Maintenance Oil Matt when the surface appears dry or patchy. This restores the natural matte look.
Lacquered Floors
Neutral, soap-based cleaner only — FirstFloor Wood Floor Cleaner is safe on lacquered finishes. No oils. For wear protection on high-traffic areas, apply FirstFloor GrainGuard. Spot-repair scratches with a specialist kit.
Common Mistakes
- Steam mops
- Harsh detergents
- Too much water
